Flotus Needs to Hire the Sneaky Chef

by Kim D.

Most moms, at one time or another, have had the food-rejection experience where nothing they cook for their children works.  I have been known to serve waffles for dinner, just to get my preschooler through a meal, on to the bath, and off to bed. I struggled though the twos and threes with this because my son is a picky eater.

Yet, I, like most moms, cannot afford to throw away experimental food on a daily basis. So, in my opinion, it is infuriating to learn that over $4M a day is being wasted on the government's school lunch program. This is taxpayer money wasted on a poorly implemented government program. But, who can blame our kids for not wanting to eating gross, unappetizing, FLOTUS-mandated food?

What I have learned is that most kids are visual and do not like foreign or spicy flavors - thanks to Missy Chase Lapine (aka the Sneaky Chef @sneakychef).  I found Missy's book last year, and it was inspiring.  Feed kids the foods they love and sneak in the fruits and vegetables.

MIssy's system, if implemented, would be beneficial to the school lunch program currently mandated by FLOTUS and her minions.  What she has devised are several purees of mixed fruits and vegetables that can be added to the food we normally make for our children.

For instance, I make an orange puree of sweet potatoes and carrots which I freeze in small portions.  When I make a grilled cheese sandwich for my son's school lunch, I spread a thick serving of this puree on both pieces of English toasting bread (perfect for grilled sandwiches and available at Wal Mart grocery stores). I use a medium-cheddar cheese which overpowers the taste of sweet potato and carrot puree. Actually, the vegetables add a sweetness that when mixed with the cheese is a pleasant surprise to the taste buds.  In other words, my picky eater has never complained about his momma's grilled cheese.  Take note FLOTUS!
